I prefer a plane for long distances.

Sometimes we don't have a choice. I haven't used the airplanes in some time and I used to love flying. Now the verry concept freaks me out for some reason.

Well, sometimes you don't have a choice. Australians certainly don't if they want to go international, unless you like cruises.

I enjoy plane travel, but I'm picky about whitch airline I choose.

while in europe, I'd rather plane travel if I can get it cheap, though I can get eurorail passes pretty cheaply, some places are still a long way and I dislike spending nights on trains.

I prefer trains to buses however. I find them more cramped and i find I get more space to relax on a train.

Love these trains, and jets. Jets are powerful and fast. You kick back, put some music on, or get a good book on either and your set. Trains are best with a friend though.

plain will be the first choice for international, as they have no other way unless swim from australia anyway, car or train for traveling within europe and part of asia, plane again for traveling between countries that would take hours if not days for either car or train to reach.
i'm someone who will try to avoid buses as much as i can when come to travel.

actually, I find train travel with a friend slightly annoying, especially if it's a long one.

If it's long, like germany to denmark, for example, I prefer to go alone because I don't feel the nagging responsibility of having to entertain another person.

Well I guess I said a friend, but I meant a lover friend, not my buddy. We can travel on the plane so he can hurry up and get to the things he keeps bragging he'll do soons we get there. Smile. Buses I've done for long travel, but there best local. Car is great too, because you can stop off at odd places to see stuff.

In order, here are my preferred ways, at least for long distances: plane, train, bus. Security when flying can be a hassle, but I don't mind, really. I just go with it. Trains are all right, especially if you can get a sleeper car if you're going a long distance. Going long distance in coach sucks, though. Believe me, I've taken more trips on Amtrak in the past year than I ever thought I would in my life, each of them approximately 24 hours. They were all more than worth it to me, but yipes!

Greyhound is my least favorite of all. At least on the planes and trains, I feel safe. On buses, I don't at all, though I'll still take them, if I absolutely have to. Last time I did, it was because the train fare was 151 dollars, and the Greyhound fare, going from and to the same places, was only 85.

Loui, I find your comment about traveling with someone vs. alone interesting. I can see your point, but I personally prefer having a companion to travel with. Well, if it's someone I like. LOL. It gives each person someone to talk to if they want, but if they don't, you can always each read your own book, or listen to your own music, etc. I guess i've never felt as if I had to entertain the person I was traveling with.

well, SD, I understand your point, but I've always prefered travelling alone. mainly because when I've travelled with people they have always wanted me to be more social than I want to be. IE wanted to talk when I wanted to listen to music or read.

I also wouldn't go on a long distance trip with a companion mainly because when I travel I have a program that I want to do and I dislike anyone messing with it.

to sister dawn, i hate busses, too.

i like trains, cars, boats and maybe plains if i can get an empty isle.

Post 11 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 05-Mar-2010 16:30:35

The bus is good and I don't much like the trains.

Post 12 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 05-Mar-2010 16:45:39

Hmmm. Boat. Never thought of that. But then, most boats aren't long distance vehicles, except if you're on a cruise. I've never done that, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

As far as local travel, I love our light rail system here in Denver. I know other cities have things like it: subways, el trains, etc. I'm glad we have the buses too, but light rail is faster and smoother. Glad they're expanding it.

Loui, that makes sense. Traveling alone or with someone is all a matter of personal preference: was just stating my own. Smile.

I love flying! I've never flown for more than two hours, but it's so much fun, especially when there's turbulance. I also enjoy takeoff.
I enjoy long car rides as well. I like to kick back for a while and just listen to music and books or write. It's very relaxing.
I've never traveled on a bus for long distances, so I couldn't touch on that matter.
As for trains, they're alright. I've never had to stay overnight in one; my longest trip was about four and a half hours. It was very long, and I wanted to take a walk because my butt was getting sore, but that's not so leisure on a train. lol

Post 14 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 06-Mar-2010 2:41:10

I'm with the last poster. The best part about flying is take-off and landing, and I do like turbulence, actually. I know, I'm weird, and if it got too terrible, I'd be scared as hell. But mild to moderate turbulence is fun. The longest flight I've been on was about 4 and a half hours, I think.

Walking through a train isn't too bad, you've just got to hang on, because of the rocking motion. But you can walk a heck of a lot farther on a train than you can a plane or bus, that's for sure. And the seats are pretty comfortable on most trains, at least Amtrak. Many have foot rests that are actually useful.

The bus seats hurt my back after not too long. Longest bus trip I've been on was 17 hours. My back and neck were screaming by the time that one was over. Ouchy!

You're right about walking on the trains. And I didn't know there were foot-rests, I'll have to look into that next time I take the train.

Post 16 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Saturday, 06-Mar-2010 16:19:28

Taking off is fun but as I get older...I just don't care for it.

Post 17 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 06-Mar-2010 18:31:29

Yes you can walk ohn a train tell you get tired. Lol. That bus. 28 hours on the bus and transfering was my longest and that was only because I just wanted to go then. Buses are for short travel to me maybe 4 5 hours tops. If I have to go by road a car is best, but you need a driver and well. haha.

Post 18 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Saturday, 06-Mar-2010 21:49:59

Yeah and I don't care for taxies...they cost so much.

Post 19 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 07-Mar-2010 15:08:32

Taxis cost a ton, but they are certainly convenient. Well, so long as you have a good driver, who speaks your language and knows the city. LOL.

Post 20 by forereel (Just posting.) on Sunday, 07-Mar-2010 16:41:37

The economy is fixing this. I've had many English speaking drivers and women too. hahaha. Some still don't know the city, but we get along.

Post 21 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 12-Mar-2010 14:03:34

Not many english speaking drivers but I try to talk with them anyway. I do like the bus because of the interesting people you run into and...oh yes the soft seats.

Post 22 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Monday, 15-Mar-2010 15:10:13

If I am travelling alone, I'd prefer flying, but I don't mind trains or buses when aplicable if I'm travelling with a friend or family member.

Post 23 by CrystalSapphire (Uzuri uongo ndani) on Saturday, 18-Sep-2010 11:27:04

I've never used a train. Maybe someday.
